The Transgender Network Berlin TGNB

In 2001 the Transgender Network Berlin (TGNB) was founded in order to connect the various transgender groups (and later also intersex groups) that were working in Berlin.

By representing 21 various transgender and intersex groups, the TGNB is the largest network of TG/IS groups in Germany today. Coming from diverse fields and activities the groups of the network cover issues such as education, counseling, peer support, social issues, politics, religion, migration, science, art, performance and leisure. Within their different approaches, the groups come together by chosen representatives who are coordinating the political work of the TGNB in a monthly plenum. They are representing a very broad spectrum of identities of the transgender and intersex movements.

The focus in the work of the TGNB is the engagement for the individual and social interests and concerns of transgender and intersex people. This relates to the task of reducing discrimination and prejudice, pathologization and exoticisation of transgender and intersex people, and furthermore to fundamentally question the two-sex/gender order. With the purpose of efficiently enforcing these goals and reaching the public effectively, working groups are being formed within the TGNB to work in various areas such as "anti-discrimination", "counseling and training" and "public education". Including reaching out to politicians and scientists to implement change of the current situation within law and society, the WG's efforts cover the education and counseling of institutes, groups and multiplicative consultants (teachers, psychologists, social workers etc.) as well as formulating statements and press material.

Establishing a scientific board in 2004 which stands in accordance to the political ambitions of the TGNB led to further qualification and recognition of the network's activities beyond the borders of Berlin.
